I have seen it so many times in so many ways. So I wanted to let folks around Northeast Arkansas know about a special benefit concert in Newport, Ark. on the afternoon of Sunday, August 30th. It’s a fundraiser for a great musician who recently passed away, Billy Lee Riley. Billy was a mainstay on the great Sun Records label out of Memphis back in the 1950’s.He worked and recorded with stars such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. Billy’s recording of “Red Hot” is still an international “Rockabilly” favorite. Because of enormous medical bills in the last few years of his life, Billy’s family could really use some help trying to pay them off. I’ll be there, along with Sonny Burnette and the Pacers, who were also with Sun Records back then, and they are still going strong. Many others from the Sun Family will appear, including Dale Hawkins (“Suzy Q.”) and Carl Mann (“Mona Lisa”). The whole deal starts at 1p.m. at the legendary Silver Moon Club, just north of Newport on Hiway 67, also known as “The Rock and Roll Highway”, because so many famous musicians started out playing the clubs along there “back in the day.” I hope everybody in that neck of the woods will show up to help out a man who brought us so much great music and caught a bad break. Believe me, he would have been there for us. For more information about Billy Lee, you can go to www.sunrecords.com September 18 Sun Music Valley Grand Opening, Featuring Sleepy LabeefROCKABILLY LEGEND SLEEPY LABEEF TO APPEAR AT OPENING OF NEW “SUN RECORDS” STORE
NASHVILLE,TN (SEPT. 9, 2009) Legendary rockabilly and boogie master Sleepy Labeef will bring his infectious high-octane brand of American roots music to the grand opening of the new Sun Records Store in Music Valley on Friday, September 18th from 7 to 9 p.m. “Mr. Labeef is a living, breathing guitar-picking history of American music,” according to the New York Times. The Tennessean said, “with a six-foot-six, 270 pound frame and a voice that can rattle windows, there are few who have ever forgotten the experience of seeing him perform.” The new Sun Store is directly behind “Cooter’s Place” on McGavock Pike, across from the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Ben Jones, who played “Cooter” on the Dukes of Hazzard is the proprietor. “We hope that our new shop will be an homage to the great music of Sun Records” says Jones. “Sleepy recorded for Sun, and he worked with Elvis and Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison and so many of the other giants of this music, and I’m delighted that he is going to be with us for this special evening. We are gonna rock that night!” Admission to the event is free. For more information about the grand opening evening at the new Sun Records Store in Music Valley call (615) 885-2727. The store is located behind Cooter’s Place at 2613 McGavock Pike in Nashville, TN, 37214.

October 2 thru October 4 HAZZARD RUN 2009 (Click For More Details)CALLING ALL CARS. CALLING ALL HAZZARD CARS! Hey Y’all, The Generals are comin’! The Generals are comin’! The General Lees are comin’, that is. And that’s good news for those who love the world’s most popular car. Our good friend Woody Smith has come up with a great idea. The First Annual Hazzard County Run will take place on Friday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 4th. Another great General Lee owner, Jett Yaskow, has volunteered to help, so between them and us and as many of you who would like to participate it looks like its gonna be a really fun deal. The event will kick off with a gathering at Cooter’s in Nashville on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, after some more carrying on at Cooter’s Nashville we will depart for Gatlinburg. We will travel I-40 East, stopping in Crossville, Tennessee for a bit (that’s about half-way) and then head on to Cooter’s in Gatlinburg, arriving late afternoon to early evening. We can party-on there Saturday Night and all day Sunday with everyone taking off when they need to. Ben “Cooter” Jones will of course be your host and plans to lead the “Run”. This will all be done in the old Sperryville tradition, just for fun, easy and very, very uncomplicated. The registration fee of $25 for each car will cover 1 Hazzard Run T-Shirt, 1 dash plaque, 1 free go-kart ride, 1 free mini-golf round and free parking at Cooter’s in Gatlinburg where the lot fee is usually $5. All Hazzard County replica cars will be welcome. Also, you can participate without paying a fee, you just won’t get the goodies. You will still need to register, however, so we can plan well. All participants and their guests will get 10% off any purchases at Cooter’s and Go-Kart rides and Mini-Golf at the Gatlinburg store will be reduced to only $5 for y’all. We’ll be adding some more fun stuff but that’s the basics right now. We want to make it a very special General Lee event, so we sure hope to see you in October, if not sooner! Ol’ Cooter and Miss Alma
